The general public has a misconception that automobile mechanics make a lot of money, more so than most trades are paying. This article will explain that this is not so. In fact for the high technology of today's vehicles, the amount of training required, the tool investment, the poor labor rate provided by the manufacturers and the plan a technician gets paid with makes him in my opinion grossly under paid. Read on. This article may be a little long but it is something that has been in the back of my mind for some time now. A little about myself to justify that I know what goes on in the automotive business. After graduating high school in 1962 I went on to a technical school for training in the automotive field. I started as an apprentice in a gas station. After a two year hitch in the army I started working in a front end repair shop, and then went to a new car dealer as a mechanic. I spent my entire working career in four dealers and six years in an independent transmission shop as the head transmission rebuilder. I have now been at the same dealer for 24 years and retirement is just around the corner. So, the question is, are automotive technicians making large amounts of money? The rest of this article pertains to mechanics/technicians that are working for the "MAN" and not pertaining to repair shop or dealer owners. Years ago back in the 60's or so the auto mechanic was perceived as a dumb looking chap with a dirty overall on with an oily rag sticking out of his back pocket. His face and hands were dirty and grease was all over the wrench in his hand. Not to mention the cigarette clenched in his lips as he acted as though he were above you. If you happen to run into this character today when trying to get your car repaired run away as fast as you can to get away from him. Today's auto mechanics are now auto technicians and rightfully so. Again, read on. Most all trades' people get paid either by the hour or on a yearly salary Autel MaxiCOM MK808. Not so an auto technician. He/she only gets paid for what they do and if the problem, no matter how complicated it may be, is not resolved the first time this technician may work hours to correct it for no pay at all whether or not it was their fault. I will explain how ridicules this is as I go on. The car of today not only has to get you from one place to another but in doing so also has to have; a stereo system, dual climate control, duel heated seats (don't want your tushi to get cold), garage openers, GDS system, Onstar, automatic windshield wipers turning on (too much trouble to turn a knob?), Automatic parallel parking, automatic headlights, etc, etc, etc. Wow, are we getting lazy! Sure all these systems make life easier and I will be the first to say I also enjoy some of them. The problem here is that besides the engine, transmission, traction control, anti lock brakes, air-conditioning and all other essential components which require on-board computers (one to six computers per car depending on make) plus numerous smart boxes we now have another dozen features requiring smart boxes which are monitored by the half dozen or so computers. Most of these systems are running using not the normal 12 volts but are reduced to ½ volts for many components. The connectors, wire harnesses and grounds are not located at convenient places. They are behind the engine by the firewall were no fingers can reach. They are between radiator and grill, between fender and fender well, under rocker moldings, under seats, under dash, under center or upper consoles, above headliners, behind "A" "B" and 'C' pillars and any other inaccessible place you can think of. Most middle aged technicians are worn out and discouraged and are looking for a less strenuous way to make a living. The people who came up with the labor operation time limit for these repairs have obviously never worked in the repair field nor have they ever seen the inside of a shop. Quite frankly I don't think they know the difference between a box wrench and a left handed tweeker pin. How they can dictate a technician's time allowance for certain jobs is beyond me. This time allowance I will explain at the end of this article. Again, if a drivability problem is intermittent it is very difficult to find and repair it. Often this will require a second or third visit to repair yet the manufacturer and/or the customer will only be willing to pay for this repair one time meaning the technician is expected to do any follow up repairs for free. This can result in hours of work at no pay even if the technician is not at fault. How do you set the standard of where the pay starts and stops? With heavy metal the labor rates are equal to about half the time it actually takes to do the job at a normal work speed. Most manufacturers don't allow for extra time if bolts are rusted and require extra time for removal using the torch. If these engine and transmission jobs are rushed and a simple mistake is made by doing so it could lead to hours of unpaid and heavy work the technician will be expected to do for free Autel Maxisys MS908CV. So, how does this pay system work? The technician gets paid per flat rate hour. Meaning, the "book" gives X amount of time to do a job. The origins of this Italian road race go back to a duel between two cities, Milan and Brescia. In 1921 the first Italian Grand Prix had taken place on the Montichiara course near Brescia. So the Brescia Automobile Club decided that something spectacular must be done to respond to Milan without offending the Royal Automotive Club of Italy.
The Brescia Automobile Club was fortunate that its membership included some very wealthy motor sports enthusiasts, some influential politicians, and talented racing drivers. They also had the expertise of Renzo Castagneto of Verona, a talented organizer who had established a name for himself in motorcycle racing. At my shop I perform a full preventative maintenance inspection on every vehicle that comes in for an oil change. I rotate the tires if needed (at no extra cost) and check things like the safety of your brakes and steering/suspension parts, battery terminals and battery condition, belts, hoses, and antifreeze protection level just to name a few. Tow trucks tow thousands of vehicles of every year for corroded battery terminals or bad batteries, split hoses, and broken belts; all things that could have been prevented if a qualified technician would have warned the vehicle's owner. People also spend thousands of dollars on brake rotors and drums every year that would not have been needed if the owner was informed that they needed brake before they started grinding.

So my advice to you is to find a mechanic that you completely trust. Someone that believes in real customer service and isn't going to just try and sell you repairs that you don't need, and take your car to them every 3-4 months for a preventative maintenance inspection. I guarantee it will save you time and money in the long run.

It is amazing the number of people that don't know how to properly clean or polish and wax their cars. Many people use products that were never intended for their car and others use products and equipment that should only be used by properly trained professionals. Some never even wax or clean their cars. Then they wonder why their car is given a very low trade in figure at the dealer, or why their paint is dull and flaking maxisys elite review.

Properly clean the car: This is very important as the use of harsh, non-automotive products can actually harm your cars finish and make it wear quicker. Spray the car first and get it wet. Use the water to spray off dirt and other contaminates that will scratch your car if you immediately start using a sponge and water first. Also do not clean your car in the sun on a hot day. Follow the directions on the bottle. Then wash the car. You will find it easier if you use a long handled wash brush (most auto parts stores have these). Be sure to wash and rinse in sections so the car wash soap doesn't dry before being washed off. Then using terry cloth towels or chamois, dry the car off. Expert tip: use a squeegee. It is much faster and easier.
Remove stubborn contaminants: There will be dirt, bugs, tar, etc… that will be left after washing. There are many products that are made specifically for removing these items you're your paint and car. The resounding answer from the experts was Meguiar's bug and tar cleaner. Remove all the contaminants and follow the directions (some products can remove paint if not used correctly). Use a circular motion, just like for wax. Follow the directions for that particular cleaner polish (some require a wet or damp applicator pad others don't). Do the car one section at a time and use a clean section of cloth to buff once dry. Most cleaner polishes will dry to a whitish haze. Be sure to buff off all the haze and residue from the cleaner polish. When done the car finish will be really smooth. Car wax is also less effective in high temperatures and can actually melt on hot areas like the hood. Car polish is a polymer blend usually with no wax. Car polishes can last 1 year between coats and is very durable protection for your paint. The experts recommend a car polish with Teflon in it for maximum protection and durability. The experts love the extra, deeper shine from car wax, but all agreed it was better suited for car shows. Whichever you choose, they are both applied the same way. Apply in a circular motion and let it dry to a haze. Then buff dry with a clean terry cloth or microfiber towel. Expert tip: Don't use regular towels or diaper cloths as they can trap dirt particles and similar and leave scratch patterns in your finish. A microfiber cloth works best for removing dried car polish or car wax haze. 2 to 3 coats are recommended for maximum protection and shine. A good rule is to reapply the car polish or car wax at least 2 times per year. Expert tip: Apply car wax, not car polish (as car polish will leave streaks and smudges on glass), to your windows. Do one light coat and completely buff it off. The car wax will work better than the leading brand glass treatment for rain (it will also quite your windshield wipers).
